Master Classical Guitars

  • Torres and Hauser Inspiration

My inspiration for classical guitar making comes from the great tradition of Antonio Torres and especially Hermann Hauser (1882-1952) who made instruments for such guitar luminaries as Andres Segovia, who played Hauser’s guitars for much of his career.

Hauser’s instruments in particular have inspired me because of their wonderful tonal balance across the register with both power and projection, making them great concert instruments.

  • Wood Selection

I source my guitar wood from one of the leading guitar wood merchants in Spain. Unlike bowed string instruments (for example violin), there are many exciting and contrasting wood options for the back and sides of the guitar. Although traditionally of rosewood, cyprus or maple, increasingly makers are using more exotic South American hardwoods. Along with rosewood, Torres occasionally used European maple (similar to a violin back) and I’ve also done this very successfully. I’ve also used Pau Ferro which has a slightly tighter grain and is tonally similar to Rosewood. In all cases I ensure that the sound is warm and bright.

  • Artisan Rosettes

My rosettes are completely handmade, each one containing several thousand pieces of wood. Clients are able to choose their preferred design from the options I can offer, which are based on traditional patterns.

  • "I have been playing classical guitar for forty years and Richard’s guitar is without question the most perfect instrument I have had the privilege to play. I was lucky enough to witness Richard crafting my guitar from the day we chose the timber for the body. Richard is a master craftsman, an artist and a perfectionist. My guitar has a perfect action, and a beautiful resonance and tone. It is a pleasure and a privilege to now own one of Richard’s guitars".

I work with my clients to reflect their preferences in wood and rosette design as much as possible so that the guitar they will have reflects their own preferences.

There are many options of beautiful woods such as Pau Ferro, Maple and Rosewood for the back, and many possibilities for the design of the rosette . I enjoy collaborating with clients to ensure they will cherish their new guitar!

Trial period

I stand by all my work and am proud to offer a trial period for any of my new guitars, with a full refund if I’m not able to make adjustments that address any concerns about the sound of the finished instrument.
